Welcome
Self Portrate Hi,
My name is Alex but I always go by Rubin here on the net. This site, like most home pages, is probably pretty boring if you don't know me. Please feel free to browse around, especially check out the fiction page, and read a couple of my stories.

    Thanks,

Some new photos

Jenn and I decided to invest in a "real" camera this summer, and settled on a Nikon D40x. I am quite happy with it and we have been getting some much better pictures of nate!

And also took some artsy macro photos at the park..

LDAP OID Namespaces for the Rest of Us
Thursday, 01 February 2007

I have been toying with the idea of setting up an ldap server for the Afternet.Org IRC Network. ldap would allow us to centralize our account system, so that channel services, websites, shell accounts, and more all ran off the same account.

Nate started walking!
Thursday, 26 October 2006

Nate took his first steps yesterday (Tuesday) and I got him on tape just afterwards taking a few more. Hopefully everyone can view the movie.

He just had his 1st birthday last week, so hes right on time with it. He has been standing with the help of a table or couch for what seemed like an eternity. Recently he started pushing the little Nate-sized cart back and forth across the living-room, which may have helped him figure it out.

Time to start childproofing some more...

Security Theatre
Wednesday, 16 August 2006
Someone has posted this nice analysis of the airplane liquid scare, which is worth reading.
At some point, we're going to have to accept that there is a difference between real security and Potemkin security (or Security Theater as Bruce Schneier likes to call it), and a difference between realistic threats and uninteresting threats. I'm happy that the police caught these folks even if their plot seems very sketchy, but could we please have some sense of proportion?

YouTube Generation Gains Sentience
Monday, 14 August 2006

My generation, those who were computer geeks at the dawn of computer geekdom, have often contemplated what life would be like for the next generation behind us, who grow up with multimedia and broadband internet the way we grew up with radio and television. Out of my involvement with AfterNET which has a good share if younger folks, curiosity about what life will be like for my son Nate, and partly because the child inside me refuses to die, I have maybe been more curious than most about this next generation of people, the YouTube/MySpace generation...

Fishtank Disaster
Monday, 10 April 2006

So, I walked down into my basement office on Saturday to investigate a weird noise, and discovered my beautiful 46 gallon aquarium (shown here when I first set it up last year) had only an inch of water in it. The rest, was all over everything.. carpet, mail, paperwork, and CDs.

We spent the rest of the weekend doing fishy triage and driving all over town trying to find a replacement tank. Then at lunch today, I rented a carpet cleaner to get most of the smell out of my office. What a weekend!

UPDATE: Pics of the new setup
