Welcome
Self Portrate Hi,
My name is Alex but I always go by Rubin here on the net. This site, like most home pages, is probably pretty boring if you don't know me. Please feel free to browse around, especially check out the fiction page, and read a couple of my stories.

    Thanks,
  -Rubin

Don't Support Major Labels
Sunday, 01 February 2004
Think Paying For CDs Helps Musicians? (It DOesn't) Don't support major labels, Those that know me have heard the rant. I don't buy CDs. I havn't since the RIAA's first lawsuit against individual music downloaders. They arn't paying the artists, and why should I fund their legal attack force? Then comes itunes. A new way to pay more for music they still don't pay artists for. Downhill Battle is fighting to educate people on the evils of the big 5 record labels.

Update: another good link about this. Could we see a real boycott taking shape?

Play along with NASA
Saturday, 03 January 2004
Showing off how cool they really are, NASA has made available the 3d mapping and control software they use to control the new mars probe 'Spirit'. Its called Maestro, its java based (works on any OS) and is a really cool way to understand what is being done. You can zoom around in the world as Spirit sees it on mars, and give the model rover commands. (note: the site got slashdotted, and may be down for a day or two)

Its Cold
Saturday, 03 January 2004
Its cold, in Minneapolis. So cold that dispite our apt being a comfy 71F the windows are iced up on the inside. Last nights low was -20F with high winds.

if Powerpoint makes you stupid. "..Microsoft's ubiquitous software forces people to mutilate data beyond comprehension."

Too Perfect
Tuesday, 07 October 2003
Came across an interesting site today, where you can see the tricks media artists use to change real photos into the type you see on TV or in magazine ads. I more than most probably am conscious that a lot of the imagery in our lives is not real, but its shocking to see just how not real they are.

Where abouts are you now?
Sunday, 05 October 2003
I've moved to Minneapolis, MN where Jenn is attending UMN Medical School. We will likely be here for the next 4 years. I've posted some pics of our new place.

Inside the Soul of the Web
Monday, 08 September 2003
A very interesting view of humanity, technology and google. Michael Malone spends 24 hours watching the web through a little terminal at google headquarters.
