Movies

I like most people enjoy the latest flicks, and as much as I like a good bad action movie, there are very few movies I would ever wan't to actually own. These are movies that are truely good, not just entertaining. Movies you would watch again, or set loved ones down to see because they are moving. In short, this is my DVD short list. Watch the following:

  • The Shawshank Redemption (1994) - Staring Tim Robbins, one of my fav actors. Also Legendary Morgan Freeman. Good story, good acting, a definate must see.
  • The Sixth Sense (1999) - Bruce Willis jumps beond his b movie action rolls in this thought provoking thriller. Stars also Haley Joel Osment.
  • Harvey (1950) - James Stewart (classic killer actor) is Elwood P. Dowd, a happy-go-lucky fellow with a Pooka for a friend. This movie has a special place in my heart. Most of you won't get it, and thats OK, I do and I like it (: btw its black and white.
  • Rat Race (2001) - A very funny comedy, featuring all sorts of people from Woopy Goldberg to John Cleese to Cuba Gooding Jr. Its like going along on a comedian convention. Laugh a lot.
  • 12 Monkies (1996) - Another Bruce movie thats more than die hard. A crazy sci-fi movie about the end of civilization.
  • The Matrix (1999) - The ultimate movie for any self-respecting geek, and a decent movie for everyone else. I'd say more but I know you already saw this one anyway.
  • The Thomas Crown Affair (1999) - I don't really like Rene Russo much, but Pierce Brosnan is awesome, and this movie is one of the best burglery movies out there. I especally like the scene with all the bowler hats.
  • Memento (2000) - I really enjoy movies that are totally different from anything else. Plus, this movie really makes you think about the human existance, and how we manage to keep everything together.
  • 2001 A space Oddisy (1968) - Stanley Kubrick directed this classic view of what the year 2001 year was supposed to look like. Has the famous "Hal9000" A.I. computer, interplanetary space flight, and some (still) damn good special effects, as well as a plot that smokes crack.

Besides the killer movies above, these I found to be pretty good:

  • Amelie (2002) - A french movie, with subtitles, but still worth the see. A cookie love story, but not at all boring ;) Some cool shots of Paris too.
  • The Boondock Saints (2000) - This movie was completely overshadowed by The Matrix, but hadn't it been for that, and maybe a little more advertizing, it would have been a #1 hit. Irish guys who kick ass.
  • Fight Club (1999) - I avoided this movie, mostly because i'm pretty passive and not into fighting. Boy was I wrong. This is up there with sixth sense and the matrix.
  • Arlington Road (?) -Tim Robbins again, this time in a thriller about terrorist plots. One of the best conspiricy theory movies.
  • The Rock (?) - Nickolas Cage does a shockingly good job in this action movie based on Alcatrez.
  • Mad Max (1980) - A classes post-apocolyptic movie, staring Tina Turner among others.
  • Tron (1982) - One of the first 'hacker' type movies, set inside old video games people born after 1980 have never heard of.
  • War Games (?) - A kid uses a 300 baud modem to break into the governments nuclear war computer. Mayhem follows.
  • The Postman (1997) - This movie is really long, and most people just wern't patient enough to get it. I found it to be a very cool vision of what happens when civilization collapses and builds up again. Plus, its got Tom Petty in it.
  • The Hunt for Red October (1990) - The king of sub movies, this movie is legendary, and has Sean Connery, and Alec Baldwin in it.
  • American Beauty (1999) - This movie is a sort of modern artsy film, facing current issues in rural america. Has enough twists in it to keep your brain occupied too.
  • Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) - Another classic movie, basically the first "teen" movie of the modern age.
  • Dogma (1999) - Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Jay, Silent Bob, and a bunch of other cool folks star in this religious spoof/clerks sequil. Pretty funny, and kinda interesting.
  • O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) - Good for the music alone, but also really funny and interesting. George Clooney..
  • The Princess Bride (1987) - Classic fairy tail movie. Funny and full of action.
  • Wag the Dog (1997) - Dustin Hoffman, a really good conspiricy movie; basically Dustin is running the government from behind the scenes.
  • Being John Malcovitch (1999) - A very strange movie .. these people find a "portal" into the Actor John Malcovitch's head, and procede to do weird things with it.
  • Star Wars (all) - These have to be on this list.. they arnt that "good" but they are so very very good.
  • Star Trek (all) - I especally like Wrath of Kahn, but all star trek movies are worth watching a few times just coz.
  • Harry Potter (2001) - The books that swept the world under, as a movie. Its a socal requirement to see, and a bit overdone in the media, but still a good movie.
  • Lord of the Rings (2002) - Based on Tolkein's famous books. Pretty darn cool, though movie #1 ended a bit abruptly.
  • A.I. Artificial Intelegence (2001) - Another Kubrick movie, though he died and Spielberg messed it up pretty badly. This I have to mention here though because if you can get over the length, its an epic story, and based on some Isaac Azimov ideas I believe.
  • Short Circut - That movie staring the mistakenly intelegent "Johnny five" robot

These are also really cool movies....
Shrek, Legend, Monsters Inc, Willow, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimention, Oceans Eleven, Planet of the Apes, The Abyss, The Fifth Element, Jurassic Park, The Last Starfighter, Logans Run, Enemy Mine, Dark City, K-Pax, The Virgin Suicides, The Devil's Advocate, 007(all), Innerspace, Clerks, Heist, Snatch, Raising Arizona, As Good As It Gets, Sliding Doors, Spaceballs, The Blues Brothers & BB2000, Pretty Woman, Pink Panther(any), Ghostbusters, The Truman Show, The Birdcage, Toys, Big, Ghost, The Big Lebowski, Clue, A Fish Called Wanda, Election, Beetlejuice, Short Circuit, Bicentennial Man, Hardware Wars, Cruel Intentions, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Crocodile Dundee, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion, The Replacement Killers, Me, Myself & Irene, Used Cars, Pushing Tin, Bill & Ted's Exelent Adventure, Back to the Future, Tin Men, MIB, A Clockwork Orange, X-Files, Contact, Tremors, The Cat From Outer Space, * batteries not included, Jackal.
